Page 20 Paragraph 3
First two words:  “Aren’t You”
Last two words:  “ a baby”
The passage you chose is a great example of a simile type of passage.
This passage is a simile type of passage because Peter is comparing Fudge to a baby using the word “like.”
Why do you think Peter refers to Fudge as acting like a baby?
- Peter compares Fudge to a baby because Fudge wants Peter to read him a story and is in Peter’s bed waiting on him.  Fudge does not want to sleep by himself.
This passage adds to the story because it gives the readers a sense of Fudge’s personality.  The simile Peter uses is perfect to describe a four year old who is scared to sleep in his own bed.  This passage makes the readers realize often four year olds are afraid to sleep by yourself. You want to continue reading to see if Fudge can start sleeping in his own room and be a big boy.

First two words:  “By the”
Last two words:  “dental assistant”
The passage you chose is a great example of a surprising type of passage.
This passage is a surprising type of passages because Ann Hatcher (the mother) wants to go back to school and study art history when she has just had a baby and has two other children to look after.  This is surprising because how can she manage a family and take classes too.
Why do you think Mrs. Hatcher wants to go back to school and study art instead of being a dental assistant?
-Mrs. Hatcher wants to go back to school and study art history because it is a big interest in her life and she wants to have a change from being a dental assistant.
This passage adds to the story because it is surprising to read about a grown married woman who is a mother and wants to go back to school.  Most of the time we do not think about a mother going back to school and getting another degree.  It also adds to the story because it shows Mrs. Hatcher has courage.
The passage makes the reader want to continue reading on to see if Mrs. Hatcher actually does go back to college and study art history.

Controversial

Last two words: “asked Mom”
Controversial type of passage
This passage is a controversial type of passage because tension arises between Peter and his parents about having another child in the house.
Why do you think Peter is so upset his parents did not tell him earlier they were going have another baby?
-Peter is upset because his parents did not tell him they were having another baby because Peter did not feel important enough for them to tell about having a baby.  Also Peter thinks the new baby will be another Fudge and he doesn’t think he can stand another Fudge.
This passage adds to a story because the Hatcher family will be having another member of their family added to the book.  This means there will be more to talk about and make the family more interesting.

-Because Peter knew Shelia was afraid of Turtle and she thought Turtle would sic her but Sheila didn’t know that Turtle didn’t even know what sic her meant.
The author included this passage in the story because she thought it would make the reader laugh and they would enjoy the running and screaming of Sheila.
